Section 1: Oporto - N12 (5.9 Km)

The second stage of A Rota 18 begins in the heart of Oporto, a city declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and regarded as one of Portugal’s great historical and cultural landmarks. For the first few kilometers, the route crosses broad avenues and urban neighborhoods where historic buildings, modern shopping areas and the restless atmosphere of the country’s second most important city all coexist.

The route heads east, following a succession of major roads that gradually lead out of the city center. As we leave the most monumental districts behind, the landscape shifts into a residential and industrial setting, reflecting the intense economic activity that defines the Porto metropolitan area. Traffic is heavier than on the rest of the route, so it is worth paying close attention to the many junctions, roundabouts and access roads.

On this first stretch, it is well worth enjoying the contrast between the historic city, built at the mouth of the río Duero, and the modern road network that channels access toward the interior of the country. Little by little, the buildings grow taller, wide business districts appear, and the route draws closer to the main transport corridors connecting Oporto with northern Portugal.

This ride acts as a transition between the urban atmosphere of the Atlantic coast and the secondary roads that will define the rest of the stage. In just a few kilometers, we will leave the city bustle behind and begin a journey that will take us from the ocean to the mountains and plains of Trás-os-Montes, discovering some of the most spectacular landscapes in northern Portugal.

Section 2: N12 - N15 (1.1 Km)

After leaving the metropolitan area of Porto, the route continues along the N12, one of the city’s main outbound roads heading north. In just a few kilometers, the urban setting begins to change, leaving behind the large road infrastructures and entering an area where residential buildings and industrial zones coexist with increasingly open spaces.

The road maintains a broad, comfortable layout, making it possible to gradually leave behind the heavy traffic of the city center. As we move on, the landscape opens up and you can feel the metropolitan area falling away, while the wide avenues give way to a much more open setting.

This stretch marks the true beginning of the journey into the interior of Portugal. Little by little, we leave behind the urban atmosphere of the Atlantic coast to head toward the secondary roads that will shape much of the stage, starting a day in which the scenery will keep changing constantly.

The route ends by continuing along the N12, definitively leaving the last major approaches to Porto behind and heading north.

Section 3: N15 - M611 (0.5 Km)

The route continues along N15, a broad avenue that gradually carries us further away from the center of Porto. Along this stretch we pass through an area with a clearly urban character, where residential buildings, small shops, and numerous businesses predominate, reflecting the intense activity of the metropolitan area.

The road has a straight layout and a surface in good condition, allowing for a comfortable ride despite the usual traffic in this area. On both sides of the road, established neighborhoods, commercial premises, and service warehouses follow one after another, while the city slowly fades behind us.

As we move on, the surroundings begin to thin out and the traffic flows more smoothly. This stretch serves as a transition between the broad urban avenues and the roads that, a few kilometers farther on, will lead us toward the landscapes of the interior of northern Portugal.

The stretch ends at an intersection, where we will turn right to continue along N15, following the planned route of A Rota 18.

Section 4: M611 - M1432 (6.5 Km)

The route continues along the M611, leaving the densest part of Porto behind for good and heading into a succession of residential neighbourhoods where the city gradually begins to fade away. For the first few kilometres, the road passes broad avenues lined with apartment blocks, small shops and local businesses that reflect the everyday rhythm of this metropolitan area.

As we go on, the urban setting gives way to more open spaces. The buildings become less compact and green areas and small vegetation-covered slopes begin to appear, while the road keeps a comfortable line, with wide bends and a surface in excellent condition that makes for a relaxed ride.

The last kilometres run through small towns on the outskirts of the city, where detached houses, stone walls and the first traditional homes announce the start of an increasingly rural landscape. In the distance, the gentle hills of the interior are already beginning to emerge, hinting at the change of scenery that will shape the rest of the stage.

The stretch ends at a junction, where we will turn left to continue along the M1432, leaving the metropolitan area of Oporto behind and heading into the interior of northern Portugal.

Section 5: M1432 - N209-1 (4.2 Km)

After leaving the last streets of the urban center behind, the route continues along the M1432, a secondary road that marks the true beginning of the changing landscape. In just a few hundred meters we leave the houses and small businesses behind and head into a much quieter setting, where nature begins to take center stage in the ride.

The road is in very good condition and has a pleasant layout, linking gentle bends through extensive eucalyptus forests that accompany virtually the entire stretch. The shade of the trees and the light traffic convey a welcome sense of calm, very different from the urban atmosphere of the previous kilometers.

For much of the route the landscape remains dominated by the forest, broken only by the occasional isolated house and small rural tracks that wind in among the trees. It is a short stretch, but it clearly shows how the route finally leaves the metropolitan area behind and heads into the interior of northern Portugal.

The stretch ends at an intersection, where we will continue straight on to join the N209-1, beginning a new section of the stage.

Section 6: N209-1 - N319-2 (3.8 Km)

We continue along the N209-1, a secondary road that fully enters the forest landscape of the interior of northern Portugal. For much of the route, we ride between dense eucalyptus woods and other native species, in a quiet setting where traffic is practically nonexistent and nature accompanies every kilometer.

The road surface remains in very good condition and the route is highly enjoyable, linking gentle bends and small changes in elevation that make the ride especially pleasant. The lush vegetation, abundant throughout, forms in some sections a true green corridor that provides shade and reinforces the feeling of isolation from the urban areas we have left behind.

Little by little, the forest begins to open up and the first scattered houses appear, announcing our arrival at a small settlement. The landscape then combines woodland with agricultural holdings and traditional buildings, showing the balance between nature and rural life so characteristic of this area.

In the final meters we reach the town of Aguiar de Sousa, where its parish church stands out, one of the municipality’s most representative buildings and a landmark for those passing through the town.

The section ends at an intersection, where we will turn left to continue the route along the N319-2 .

Section 7: N319-2 - Recarei (6.3 Km)

The route continues along the N319-2, a secondary road that winds into an increasingly green and rolling landscape. From the very first kilometers, the ride unfolds between eucalyptus and pine forests, alternating gentle bends with small changes in elevation that make the ride especially enjoyable. Traffic is very light and the sense of calm grows as we move farther away from the last urban areas.

For much of this stretch, the road crosses a very well-kept natural setting, where the woodland blends with small meadows and vegetation-covered slopes. At several points, information panels appear announcing different natural areas and hiking routes, reflecting the important scenic value of this region.

Little by little, the forest gives way to a more open landscape. Scattered houses begin to appear, small farms and the first streets of the towns that line the route, where everyday life goes by with the quiet rhythm typical of inland northern Portugal.

The final kilometers take us to a small urban center, where traditional stone houses stand alongside more recent buildings. The road keeps a comfortable, well-marked line, making it easy to reach the end of the stretch.

The route ends at a roundabout, where we will take the second exit to continue along the N319, following the route into the interior of Portugal.

Section 8: Recarei - Cerrado (8.3 Km)

The route continues along the N319, a secondary road that crosses a typically rural landscape in northern Portugal. After leaving the initial roundabout, the ride links gentle bends between small villages, cultivated fields and wooded areas, offering a calm and very enjoyable ride.

For much of the way, the road runs between scattered houses, farm estates and small stands of eucalyptus and pine trees, alternating with open stretches that offer wide views over the gentle hills of the region. The surface remains in very good condition and traffic is light, allowing you to fully enjoy the surroundings.

The route passes through small settlements such as Sobreira, Quintadona, Escariz and Lagares, where traditional stone houses sit alongside more recent buildings. At several points, signposts appear pointing to different places of interest in the area, reflecting the rich historical and natural heritage of this region.

As we continue, the road winds between vegetation-covered slopes and small valleys, alternating well-shaped bends with short straights that make the ride especially entertaining for the motorcyclist. The atmosphere is thoroughly rural and gives the feeling of having definitely left the metropolitan area of Oporto behind.

The stage ends at an oblique junction, where we will turn left to continue along the N319, following the planned route of A Rota 18.

Section 9: Cerrado - M1300 (4.7 Km)

We continue along the indeterminate secondary road, which preserves the pleasant rural feel of the last few kilometres. The route leaves the small settlement of Figueira behind to once again enter an environment dominated by eucalyptus forests, small hills and a few scattered houses, where calm once again takes centre stage.

The road surface is in excellent condition and the layout is very flowing, alternating gentle bends with medium-length straights that allow for relaxed riding. Vegetation accompanies almost the entire route, forming in many stretches a pleasant green corridor that provides shade and reinforces the feeling of travelling through the interior of northern Portugal.

As we progress, small clearings appear from which some villages can be seen perched on the gentle hills of the region. The route also crosses several sparsely populated settlements, where traditional granite houses sit alongside more recent homes, always preserving the area’s strong rural character.

Traffic remains very light and the road invites us to keep an easy pace, enjoying the surroundings and a ride that combines nature, small населations and a particularly pleasant layout for riding.

The stage ends at a Stop, where we turn right to continue along the M1300, heading towards the next section of A Rota 18.

Section 10: M1300 - Ras (4.4 Km)

We continue along the M1300, a secondary road that keeps winding its way into the interior of northern Portugal, between forests, small villages, and gentle hills. For the first few kilometers, the route crosses a very peaceful setting, where eucalyptus trees and pines once again line the road, forming pleasant green corridors.

The layout alternates medium-length straights with gentle bends, with a surface in excellent condition and virtually no traffic. The ride is comfortable and lets you enjoy the scenery, which combines forested areas with small meadows and a few scattered farms.

Little by little, the first houses of the rural settlements crossed by the route begin to appear. Traditional granite houses blend with more recent buildings, while the views open out over the hills surrounding this area, offering a lovely panorama of the Portuguese inland landscape.

At the 46th kilometer of the route, we pass through the outskirts of Aguiar, where the surroundings retain their strong rural character and the road continues to offer a very smooth and enjoyable ride for the motorcyclist.

The stretch ends in Ras, where we will continue straight ahead after a cross-shaped stop sign.

Section 11: Ras - N320 (5.3 Km)

After joining the M1293, the route continues along a local road that winds through a landscape where small villages, wooded areas, and gentle hills alternate. In the first few kilometers, we leave behind the last streets of the urban center and head into a much quieter setting, where houses are scattered among farmland and stands of eucalyptus.

The road surface is in very good condition, and the layout is very pleasant to ride, combining gentle bends with small changes in elevation. On both sides, traditional granite houses, gardens, and family vegetable plots appear, while the landscape occasionally opens up, offering lovely views over the valleys and nearby towns.

As we go on, the route regains a strong rural character. The forests once again take center stage, alternating with small farms and quiet local roads that connect the different villages in the area. It is a very relaxed stretch, ideal for enjoying the unhurried rhythm that defines this part of A Rota 18.

By kilometer 51 of the route, we reach the outskirts of Avelheira de Além, where the road once again draws close to a small inhabited area without losing the pleasant rural atmosphere that has accompanied us throughout the ride.

The stretch ends at a T intersection, where we will turn right to continue on the N320, following the route toward the interior of northern Portugal.

Section 12: N320 - M586 (5.2 Km)

After turning right on the previous stretch, we continue along the N320, a road that passes through the last streets of the urban area before quickly returning to a much more natural setting. In the first few meters we leave behind some houses, small shops and services, and head once again into the peaceful rural landscape that characterizes this part of the stage.

The road has a surface in very good condition and a highly pleasant layout, linking gentle bends between small hills covered with eucalyptus and pine trees. On both sides, a few scattered houses and farmsteads appear intermittently, while the vegetation once again takes center stage as we move away from the town.

The route runs between forests and small valleys, alternating broad curves with short straights that let you enjoy smooth, relaxed riding. Traffic remains very light and the silence of the surroundings makes this stretch one of the most enjoyable since we left the metropolitan area of Oporto.

Little by little, the road enters an increasingly lush forest corridor, where the shade of the trees accompanies much of the route and hints at the arrival in even more mountainous areas of inland Portugal.

The stretch ends at a T junction, where we will continue straight to join the M586.

Section 13: M586 - Constance (9.3 Km)

After joining the M586, the route enters a much more open, rolling landscape, where woodland begins to alternate with small farms and gentle hills. The road quickly leaves the last houses behind, offering a very enjoyable ride, linking well-shaped bends through broad forested areas and clearings from which pleasant views over the valley can be enjoyed.

Over the first few kilometres we pass through small settlements such as Casal de Ponte, Anho and Montadas, where traditional granite houses live alongside farmsteads and small country lanes. Traffic remains very light and the excellent road surface invites you to enjoy a relaxed ride.

As we continue towards the 65th kilometre of the route, the landscape becomes more expansive. The woods give way to cultivated areas and meadows, while wide panoramas begin to open up over the hills that define this region in northern Portugal. It is a very varied stretch, where small villages, open spaces and pleasant secondary roads alternate.

In the last few kilometres the road passes the outskirts of Tapados and approaches São Pedro, where a few houses, small shops and services reappear, announcing arrival in a slightly more populated area.

The stretch ends in Constance, where we will look for the N211, ending the section..

Section 14: Constance - N101-5 (4.5 Km)

The route continues along the N211, skirting the outskirts of Marco de Canaveses as it approaches the valley of the río Duero. The road widens and offers a very comfortable layout, linking broad bends from which beautiful views begin to open up over the hills and the river landscape that defines this area.

Along the way we cross a transitional area between the rural and urban landscape. On one side, residential areas and a few services appear, while on the other the vegetation-covered slopes and the first views of the valley begin to take over. The excellent quality of the surface and the width of the carriageway make for very smooth riding.

When we reach kilómetro 70 of the route, we find ourselves at one of the points where the terrain starts to take center stage. The road passes under a large viaduct and continues descending gently, foreshadowing the spectacular landscapes that will accompany the route over the next few kilometers.

The panoramic views over the surroundings of Marco de Canaveses and the gentle slopes around the Duero signal a change of scenery compared with the previous sections, leaving behind the more wooded areas as we move closer to one of the regions with the strongest landscape identity in northern Portugal.

The section ends at an intersection, where we will turn right to continue along the N101-5.

Section 15: N101-5 - Outeiro (14 Km)

After joining the N101-5, the route continues along a road that winds through the gentle hills of the interior, crossing a landscape where small rural settlements alternate with farmland and woodland. From the first kilometers, the ride offers an excellent road surface and a very enjoyable layout, combining sweeping bends with medium-length straights that invite you to savor the ride.

The road passes through places such as Várzea do Velho, Durigo, Móis, Folhada and Gouveia–São Simão, where traditional granite houses live alongside small farms, gardens and family vegetable plots. As we make our way onward, the landscape opens up at several points, allowing us to take in wide panoramas over the valleys and slopes that define this part of northern Portugal.

For much of the route, the road alternates between small inhabited hamlets and stretches surrounded by vegetation, always keeping a peaceful atmosphere and very little traffic. The gentle undulations of the terrain and the constant views over the hills make this stretch one of the most enjoyable of the day.

When we reach the 84th kilometer of the route, we approach Campinhos, where the surroundings once again bring together a few houses and small services before tackling the next kilometers inland.

The stretch ends at a junction, where we will turn left to join the N101, continuing along the planned route.

Section 16: Outeiro - Mesao Frio (20 Km)

With more than 84 km covered in today’s stage, we continue on the N101, one of the most appealing roads of this second stage, carrying us through a landscape of mountains, deep valleys and small rural settlements. From the very first kilometers, the route links broad bends and gentle changes in elevation, offering a very smooth ride as the panoramas over the surroundings become increasingly spectacular.

Along the way we pass through small towns such as Pardinhas, Tolões, Lobos do Monte and Quintela, where traditional houses alternate with meadows, cultivated areas and small farming holdings. The road surface remains excellent and traffic is very light, inviting us to enjoy the ride unhurriedly.

As we go on, the landscape opens up. Vegetation-covered slopes appear on both sides of the road and, at many points, magnificent views unfold over the valleys of inland northern Portugal. This is one of those stretches where it is worth pausing to take in the relief that defines this region.

Throughout this stretch of the route, the road keeps winding between mountains, alternating long curves with short straights that let you fully enjoy the ride. The journey combines nature, peace and some of the best panoramas of this first half of the stage.

The section ends in Mesao Frio, a locality that in the past was well known for the beautiful public hotel establishment «Solar da Rede», which belonged until its closure to the Pousadas de Portugal chain..

Section 17: Mesao Frio - Martir (5 Km)

With a third of the stage covered, we continue along M601, riding through one of the most spectacular landscapes on all of A Rota 18. The road winds along the slopes of the Duero valley, crossing a region shaped for centuries by vine cultivation. The terraced vineyards cover the mountainsides all the way to the riverbank, creating an unmistakable image of the Alto Duero Vinhateiro, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The route is great fun, linking a continuous string of bends between small villages and stepped vineyards. With every turn, new views open up over the valley, where the river runs tightly between the mountains, forming one of Portugal’s most iconic landscapes. The excellent road surface and light traffic let you fully enjoy the ride and the surroundings.

Very close to the route, we find several viewpoints where it is well worth stopping for a few minutes to take in the sheer scale of the valley. From there, you can clearly see the work carried out over generations to build the stone terraces that make it possible to grow vines on such steep slopes, creating a landscape unique in the world.

Upon reaching kilometer 109 of the route, we pass through small localities such as Mártir, where the road continues skirting the slopes among vineyards, stone walls and traditional rural houses, always maintaining privileged views over the Douro valley.

The section ends at an intersection, where we turn left to join M1326, continuing the route of A Rota 18.

Section 18: Martir - Sobre a Fonte (5 Km)

The route continues along the M602, a narrow local road that keeps the ride tracing the slopes of the Douro valley. After leaving the previous stretch, the road keeps winding between small villages and vineyards, offering a much more intimate and peaceful atmosphere than the main roads in the area.

For much of the way we pass through places such as Carvalho and Arrabalde de Baixo, where traditional houses blend in with stone terraces, small cultivated plots and vineyards covering the mountain slopes. The road is narrow, with a surface in good condition and numerous bends that invite you to enjoy the ride at a leisurely pace.

As we head toward kilometer 114 of the route, the views open up once again over the landscape of the Alto Duero Vinhateiro. The stone walls supporting the terraced fields, the small roads that adapt to the terrain and the vine-covered slopes create a unique setting, the result of centuries of human work on steep ground.

The last meters of the stretch run between narrow rural lanes and old stone buildings, preserving intact the traditional character of these small wine-growing villages. It is a short route, but full of charm, allowing you to enjoy up close one of Portugal’s most emblematic landscapes.

The stretch ends in Sobre a Fonte, where we will join the M600.

Section 19: Sobre a Fonte - M603 (6 Km)

After joining the M600, the route briefly leaves behind the valley’s grand viewpoints and heads onto a much twistier, narrower road, perfectly suited to the rugged relief of the Alto Duero Vinhateiro. The route winds between small villages, vineyards and wooded areas, offering a highly enjoyable ride in a setting of outstanding beauty.

For the first few kilometres we pass through small rural hamlets where traditional stone houses live side by side with terraced vineyards and olive groves covering the mountain slopes. The road strings together continuous bends and small changes in elevation, calling for an unhurried pace that allows you to fully enjoy the scenery.

As we make our way towards kilometre 120 of the route, the ride alternates between open stretches and others sheltered by vegetation. At some points magnificent views of the Douro terraces appear once again, while at others the road slips between forests and small valleys, offering a constant change of scene.

The small villages that line the route have preserved the traditional character of this wine-growing region intact. Stone walls, narrow streets and old rural houses remind us that we are in a land where vine cultivation has been part of the landscape and of everyday life for centuries.

The stretch ends at a Y-shaped junction, where we take the left-hand branch to continue along the M603.

Section 20: M603 - N304-3 (5 Km)

After leaving the previous section behind, the road continues to wind along the slopes of the Douro Valley, offering very enjoyable riding between sweeping bends and a road surface in excellent condition. As we ride on, the landscape opens out over the distinctive vineyard terraces that have brought worldwide fame to this region, where each slope seems carefully sculpted to make the most of the gradient.

The route passes through small villages such as Fontelo and Mundo Novo, where traditional stone houses live side by side with old estates devoted to growing vines and olive trees. At several points the road narrows slightly as it crosses through the centre of the towns, before opening up again among vineyards and terraces from which magnificent views of the valley are enjoyed.

Upon reaching approximately kilometre 125 of the stage, the surroundings fully convey the essence of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gentle bends let you enjoy, without rushing, one of the most spectacular wine-growing landscapes in Europe, where the stepped slopes accompany the motorcyclist for much of the route.

The section ends at a T-junction, where we will turn left to continue climbing along the next road.

Section 21: N304-3 - Fontes (2 Km)

This stretch continues along a secondary road that retains the quiet, winding character of the previous kilometres. The route runs along the valley slopes, linking a succession of well-shaped bends that let you enjoy the ride while the scenery alternates between small wooded areas, vineyards and agricultural plots typical of this Douro region.

Traffic is light and the surface remains in very good condition, inviting you to ride at an easy pace through an area where villages are scattered among the mountains. It is one of those routes where the surroundings convey a pleasant sense of isolation, far from the main transport arteries.

By the time we reach kilometre 127 of the route, we have already covered almost a third of the stage. The landscape continues to offer the essence of the Alto Douro, with winding roads that adapt to the relief and turn every curve into a new perspective on this spectacular territory.

The stretch ends in the locality of Fontes, where we will turn right to join the M1240.

Section 22: Fontes - N304 (4 Km)

The road continues to descend gently between the valley slopes, offering a very enjoyable ride along a narrow local road that winds between vineyards, olive groves, and small traditional villages. The bends come one after another naturally, adapting to the mountain relief and constantly opening up views of the characteristic landscape of the Alto Douro.

Along the way we pass through small rural settlements where stone houses live alongside old quintas and cultivated plots laid out in terraces on the slopes. The stone walls that border the vineyards and the constant presence of olive trees remind us that we are in one of the most prestigious wine regions in Portugal.

At kilometer 131 of the route, the valley continues to reveal some of its most representative scenes. The road alternates between sections enclosed by vegetation and other, much more open stretches from which you can enjoy wide panoramas over the mountains and the terraces descending toward the river.

The section ends at a T junction, where we will turn left to continue the route.

Section 23: N304 - M1291 (7 Km)

After leaving the previous stretch, the road continues climbing along the valley slopes on a very twisty layout that makes this section one of the most enjoyable of the stage. The bends link together constantly as the road adapts to the mountain terrain, passing through a landscape dominated by terraced vineyards, stone walls, and small patches of Mediterranean vegetation.

Along much of the route, magnificent panoramas unfold over the Duero valley and the slopes covered with terraces, where the vine remains the great protagonist. The excellent condition of the pavement and the light traffic make it possible to fully enjoy the ride, always keeping your attention on the continuous chain of bends.

As we approach kilometer 138 of the route, the scenery retains all the spectacular character that defines this region declared a World Heritage Site. The road alternates between completely open stretches and short sections sheltered by vegetation, offering a constant succession of views over the valley.

The stretch ends at a T intersection, where we will turn right.

Section 24: M1291 - M1244 (1 Km)

This short stretch continues along a narrow mountain road that keeps climbing between the valley slopes, offering a very enjoyable ride. The route links together several well-shaped bends as it crosses a landscape dominated by terraced vineyards, olive groves, and small farm plots that make use of every corner of the mountain.

Open views remain for much of the route, allowing you to take in the gentle undulations of the valley and the characteristic stepped slopes that have made this region one of the most emblematic landscapes of the Douro Valley. The road surface is in very good condition and traffic is usually virtually nonexistent.

Upon reaching kilometer 139 of the route, the road keeps its calm, scenic character, offering relaxed riding in an environment where nature and the traditional work of the vine continue to shape the landscape.

The stretch ends at a T intersection, where we will turn right.

Section 25: M1244 - Rendeiro (6 Km)

This section continues along a local road that combines constant changes of direction with an excellent road surface, offering a highly enjoyable ride among the slopes of the Douro Valley. The route alternates small rural hamlets with long open stretches where vineyards, olive groves and Mediterranean vegetation once again dominate the landscape.

The road passes through villages such as Loureiro, Paradela and Barreiros, where traditional stone houses stand surrounded by small agricultural plots and old estates. In several places the road winds between dry-stone walls and cultivated terraces, reflecting the intense human effort that has shaped this territory for centuries.

As we approach kilometre 145 of the route, the views become more expansive and allow us to take in a spectacular panorama over the Douro Valley and the impressive viaduct that crosses one of its slopes. It is one of those places where it is worth slowing down to enjoy the scenery, where the roads, the vineyards and the mountains blend together to form an image that is hard to forget.

In the last kilometres we return to a more winding section, linking gentle bends between stretches of forest and vegetation-covered slopes before reaching the end of the stage.

The route ends in the town of Rendeiro where we will turn left to join the famous N2.

Section 26: Rendeiro - Vila Real (7 Km)

The road gradually leaves the most mountainous parts of the valley behind and heads toward Vila Real, joining a much more open and flowing route. For the first few kilometers, we keep riding among small farms, olive groves, and patches of woodland, while the landscape begins to soften and the bends become wider.

As we continue, the sweeping views of the Douro mountains give way to an increasingly urban setting. The first scattered houses appear, along with small industries and residential areas that signal the approach to one of the main cities in the interior north of Portugal.

Upon reaching kilometer 152 of the route, we enter the access roads to Vila Real. The road surface remains excellent and the ride is comfortable, although traffic increases gradually compared with the previous stretches. From different points, there are good views over the city and the mountain ranges that surround it, offering a beautiful contrast between the rural scenery traveled so far and the urban atmosphere that welcomes us.

The section ends in Vila Real. We have now covered almost half of the stage, and this is a good opportunity to stop for lunch and visit this lovely city, where you can see the historic center of Vila Real, with its shopping streets, squares, and stately buildings, the Cathedral of Vila Real, from the 15th century, or the Parque Natural do Alvão, located very nearby and known for the Fisgas de Ermelo waterfalls

If you have a little time or want to stay overnight here, extending the adventure of La Ruta 18 by a few days, very close to the route you will find the Palácio de Mateus, one of the great jewels of Portuguese Baroque. Surrounded by elegant gardens and vineyards, this historic 18th-century palace has become the main tourist symbol of Vila Real and is highly recommended for a visit.

Section 27: Vila Real - N312-1 (4 Km)

After leaving Vila Real, the route once again settles into a quieter pace along a secondary road that climbs gently between residential neighborhoods, small farms and agricultural areas. Little by little, we leave the urban surroundings behind and return to the characteristic landscape of Trás-os-Montes, where narrow roads and sparse traffic are once again the main feature.

Over the first few kilometers, vineyards, olive groves and small family-run holdings appear, alternating with traditional homes and scattered modern houses. The road links gentle bends with small changes in elevation, offering a relaxed ride while the mountains surrounding Vila Real remain ever present on the horizon.

At kilometer 156 of the route, the journey once again enters a much more natural setting. Vegetation takes center stage and the road crosses small forests and rural areas where the pace of life slows down again after passing through the city.

Very close to this stretch stands the Palácio de Mateus, the great monumental jewel of Vila Real. This elegant 18th-century Baroque palace, surrounded by gardens and vineyards, is one of Portugal’s most emblematic monuments and a highly recommended visit for anyone wishing to discover the city’s main tourist symbol.

The stretch ends at an intersection where we will turn left to join the N312-1.

Section 28: N312-1 - M1344 (13 Km)

The departure from Vila Real marks a dramatic change of scenery. The road enters the Parque Natural da Serra do Alvão, one of the most spectacular protected areas in northern Portugal, where the landscape turns into a succession of mountains, forests, and wide stretches of scrub that accompany the rider לאורך the entire route.

The road climbs with a very flowing layout, linking broad bends and long straights from which there are magnificent panoramic views over the valleys we are leaving behind. The excellent condition of the pavement and the light traffic make this stretch one of the most enjoyable to ride on the whole stage.

Along the route we pass by the Barragem de Cimeira, a small reservoir that provides a lovely contrast to the mountainous landscape of the sierra. A little later the road continues to gain height while broad views open up over the peaks and slopes of the Parque Natural da Serra do Alvão, a territory known for its scenic richness, its traditional villages, and its spectacular waterfalls.

Upon reaching kilometre 169 of the route, the feeling of having left the Douro valley behind is absolute. The landscape is now much more open and mountainous, offering relaxed riding in the heart of nature.

Section 29: M1344 - Indeterminada (2 Km)

After turning right at the previous junction, the road continues climbing through the heart of Parque Natural da Serra do Alvão. The landscape combines small mountain villages with meadows, groves and scrubland, offering a setting very different from the vineyard valleys we have ridden through over the previous kilometres.

The route passes through the small settlement of Lobal Bilhó, where the traditional granite houses and rural buildings preserve the most authentic character of the mountains. From here the road becomes quieter again, linking gentle bends between pastures, rocky outcrops and native vegetation, with a road surface in excellent condition and very little traffic.

Upon reaching route kilometre 171, the atmosphere is fully mountainous. The road winds between small livestock farms and wooded areas, offering relaxed and very enjoyable riding in one of the quietest spots of this stage.

The stage ends at a T junction, where we will turn right.

Section 30: Indeterminada - Lamas (11 Km)

This stretch takes us into one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes of the entire stage. The road climbs through the high reaches of the Serra do Alvão, linking a winding line of bends with broad open stretches from which extraordinary panoramas over the valleys of Trás-os-Montes can be enjoyed.

For much of the route, inhabited areas all but disappear and the landscape is dominated by granite outcrops, heath, mountain scrub and wide meadows. The feeling of openness is constant, and the excellent condition of the road surface, together with the very light traffic, makes this stretch one of the most rewarding for any motorcyclist.

The route passes through small villages such as Limões and Alvadia, where old stone buildings survive, perfectly blended into an environment that has preserved its rural character intact. Shortly after, the road climbs again, offering some of the best natural viewpoints of the whole day.

By the time we reach kilometre 182 of the route, we have already left the landscapes of the Douro valley far behind. Now the sweeping mountain views, open roads and the silence typical of the mountain ranges of inland Portugal take centre stage, creating one of the most memorable experiences of this second stage.

Section 31: Lamas - Gouvaes de Serra (7 Km)

The road continues through the high elevations of the Serra do Alvão, where the landscape becomes even more open and rugged. The broad mountain pastures gradually replace the wooded areas, while small scattered villages appear perfectly integrated into this setting of great natural beauty.

Along the way, we pass near Muradouro, a small rural settlement where traditional stone houses and the quiet rhythm of mountain life take center stage. The road keeps a very flowing line, alternating gentle bends with long stretches that let you enjoy the magnificent views over the mountains and the valleys that stretch out toward the horizon.

As we move across these high plateaus, it is easy to understand why this area is one of the least populated in Portugal. The almost total absence of traffic, the silence and the immensity of the landscape make the ride especially relaxing, with each curve revealing a new corner of the mountains.

Upon reaching kilometer 189 of the route, we are very close to the highest point of the entire stage. The air is cooler, the vegetation changes and the panoramas take on a breadth that is hard to find in other parts of the route.

Section 32: Gouvaes de Serra - N206 (3 Km)

The road continues to descend gently between small mountain villages and an increasingly open landscape, where the meadows, stone walls, and traditional granite buildings preserve the rural character of this inland Portuguese region intact. Traffic is practically nonexistent and the ride is very pleasant, linking broad bends with small changes in elevation that let you enjoy the surroundings at a leisurely pace.

Along the route, excellent views of the valley appear, while the road passes through tiny settlements where it is still possible to witness everyday rural life, such as old farm tractors working in the streets or traditional stone houses perfectly blended into the landscape.

As we continue, the horizon opens up even more and the road heads toward a modern piece of infrastructure that stands in contrast to the natural setting. A long bridge makes it possible to cross the valley, offering a magnificent perspective of the fields and hills surrounding the area, becoming one of the most scenic points of this stretch.

The stretch ends at an intersection where we must stop at the STOP sign and turn left to continue toward Ribas and Pena.

Section 33: N206 - Bela Vista (10 Km)

This stretch marks a change of scenery. After passing the two-thirds mark of the route, we leave the narrower roads behind and join a wider, modernly laid-out road that makes for especially smooth riding. The road winds between gentle slopes covered with scrub, pine woods, and outcrops of granite rock, offering a pleasant mix of fast bends and wide-open views over the inland valleys.

As we continue, the terrain becomes more rugged and the road adapts to the mountains with long, perfectly linked curves. In several places, elevated viaducts appear, crossing the ravines and highlighting the major engineering effort that went into connecting this region. The contrast between these large structures and the natural landscape is especially striking.

The vegetation also changes gradually. Pine and oak forests alternate with slopes covered in heather and broom, while the mountains around us announce the proximity of Parque Natural do Alvão, one of the most spectacular natural areas in northern Portugal.

This is a stretch made for enjoying the ride, with good pavement, generously radius bends and little traffic, ideal for linking miles while taking in an increasingly mountainous landscape.

The stretch ends in Bela Vista, reaching stage kilometer 202.

Section 34: Bela Vista - M1050 (22 Km)

We leave the surroundings of Ribeira de Pena behind to fully immerse ourselves in one of the greenest landscapes of the entire stage. The N312 runs alongside the Beça River for much of the route, crossing a setting dominated by lush forests, small scattered villages and a valley that conveys a pleasant sense of calm. The excellent condition of the road surface and the light traffic make this stretch a true pleasure to ride.

The road links gentle bends that follow the shape of the land, alternating short straights with darker sections where the vegetation almost reaches the edge of the asphalt. In some stretches the river runs very close to the road, bringing freshness to the landscape and quietly accompanying our ride among oaks, pines and abundant riverside vegetation.

Along the way, small rural settlements such as Melhe and Seros appear one after another, where traditional granite houses and a slow pace of life still prevail, closely tied to the natural surroundings. These are places where time seems to move more slowly and where the landscape retains all its authenticity.

With more than 220 kilómetros covered since leaving Porto, this part of the stage invites us to enjoy relaxed riding, letting the bends and the sound of the river set the rhythm of the journey.

The stretch ends at a junction, where we will turn right to join the M1050.

Section 35: M1050 - M530 (7 Km)

After leaving the valley of the Beça River, the road climbs again to enter a mid-mountain landscape where nature becomes the true star. The route links broad, well-paved bends between extensive pine forests, hillsides covered in heather in bloom, and small clearings from which magnificent views begin to open up over the mountain ranges that surround this area of northern Portugal.

The ride is especially enjoyable thanks to immaculate asphalt and virtually no traffic at all. The bends follow one another naturally, making it possible to keep a steady pace while the scenery alternates between open stretches and more enclosed sections where the road is completely wrapped in forest.

As we continue, the terrain becomes somewhat rougher and the route gently descends into a much shadier and cooler valley. The vegetation changes and oak trees, chestnut trees, and dense riverside woods appear, accompanying us for several kilometers along a narrow but very pleasant road to ride. It is one of those stretches where silence and the feeling of isolation are part of the experience.

At km 231 of the stage, we will turn right to continue on the M530.

Section 36: M530 - Boticas (13 Km)

The road leaves the valley to take on one of the most enjoyable stretches of this second stage. The M530 winds on relentlessly along the mountainside, linking an almost continuous succession of bends that will delight any rider. The surface is in very good condition and traffic is practically nonexistent, allowing you to enjoy the route to the full.

During the first kilometers we pass through small rural settlements such as Mosteirão and Torneiros, where the traditional granite houses appear scattered among meadows and terraces. Little by little, the landscape opens up, giving way to magnificent views over the valleys we have been riding through and the mountains that herald the approach of the highlands of Trás-os-Montes.

The route alternates wooded areas with slopes covered in heather and scrub, while the road climbs and dips gently, adapting to the terrain. At many points, broad panoramas appear that invite you to stop for a few minutes and take in the scenery. This is one of those stretches where the road seems designed for savoring bend after bend.

With the odometer already past 240 kilometers, we arrive in Boticas with the feeling of being completely immersed in nature, far from the urban bustle with which the day began in Porto.

Section 37: Boticas - M533 (13 Km)

N311 continues to offer one of the most appealing stretches of this second stage. The road winds between gentle mountains covered in pine woods and heather, linking broad, perfectly paved bends that invite you to enjoy a relaxed and precise ride. Traffic remains very light, allowing you to focus solely on the pleasure of riding and on the landscape around you.

As we move on, the road passes through small rural settlements such as Valdegas and Souto Velho, where the traditional granite buildings so characteristic of this region still endure. From one village to the next, wide panoramas unfold over the surrounding mountain ranges, while the terrain alternates gentle climbs and descents that make the route especially entertaining.

In some sections the landscape opens up completely, allowing us to take in vast forest expanses and the rolling mountains that form the transition between Trás-os-Montes and the Parque Natural do Alvão. These are very pleasant kilometers to ride, where the road seems to adapt with complete naturalness to the shape of the land.

With the odometer now approaching 260 kilometers, the stage enters one of its last major mountain sections, keeping intact the sense of adventure that defines this day.

Section 38: M533 - N103 (8 Km)

After leaving the main road, the route regains the intimate, peaceful character that defines much of A Rota 18. The road passes through small villages such as Souto Velho, Outeiro and Rebordondo, where traditional granite houses live side by side with meadows, kitchen gardens and small woods. Traffic once again becomes virtually nonexistent, allowing for relaxed, very pleasant riding.

The road alternates gentle bends with short straights that run between pine groves and cultivated fields. The terrain is less rugged than in the previous stretches, making it possible to keep a smooth pace while the landscape opens up from time to time to reveal the mountains we have been leaving behind.

Along the way, the green tones of the vegetation and the wide rural open spaces prevail, where the silence is broken only by the sound of the engine. It is a short but very varied section, combining passage through small population centers with pleasant wooded areas and meadows dotted with centuries-old trees.

With the odometer now reaching 265 kilometers, the feeling is that we have left the best-known roads behind to enter rural, authentic, lightly traveled Portugal, one of the great attractions of this stage.

The section ends at a T-junction, where we will turn left to continue on the N103.

Section 39: N103 - M527 (6 Km)

The route continues along secondary roads with excellent surfaces, crossing an open landscape where meadows and small farming holdings gradually replace the more mountainous areas. The route alternates gentle bends with long sweeping straights that let you enjoy the surroundings with relaxed riding, always surrounded by a pleasant mosaic of woods, fields and small villages.

As we move on, several bridges appear, spanning small watercourses and riverside areas, while the valley widens to offer magnificent views of the gentle hills that define this part of northern Portugal. The mountains are now a little farther away, although they still form a beautiful backdrop for much of the ride.

This stretch crosses an eminently rural setting, where traditional granite houses live alongside meadows, orchards and centuries-old trees. The road, perfectly blended into the landscape, invites you to keep a calm pace and enjoy each bend with barely any other vehicles around.

With more than 270 kilometers covered since leaving Porto, the stage enters its final stretch, though it still offers very entertaining roads and landscapes that preserve the charm of Portugal's inland regions intact.

The stretch ends at a fork, where we will take the right-hand branch towards Bobadela.

Section 40: M527 - Seara Velha (12 Km)

The road leaves the outskirts of Ardãos and heads back into an agricultural landscape of gentle hills, following the M527 through small villages where time seems to move at a different pace. The asphalt is in excellent condition and alternates straight stretches with wide, flowing bends that make the ride especially enjoyable.

The route passes through the settlements of Vinhó, Nogueira and Bobadela, preserving the quiet character of the rural areas of inland Portugal. On both sides of the road, fields of crops, vineyards, olive groves and traditional homes appear, offering an authentic scene that is highly representative of the Trás-os-Montes region.

For much of this stretch, the views open onto a rolling landscape, with gentle hills dotted with trees and farmland. The light traffic allows you to fully enjoy a comfortable road, perfect for letting yourself be carried along by the rhythm of the journey while the odometer has already passed 280 kilometers of the stage.

At kilometer 283 of the stage we arrive in Seara Velha, where this stretch ends.

Section 41: Seara Velha - Chaves (11 Km)

This stretch begins by leaving behind the small villages of Soutelo and Igreja and heading toward the outskirts of Chaves. The road links gentle bends with small changes in elevation as it crosses a сель context of farmland where meadows, crops, and scattered houses alternate, keeping the ride relaxed and very enjoyable.

After passing by Vale de Anta, the landscape gradually begins to urbanize. The route draws closer to the outskirts of Chaves, going through Casas dos Montes and giving way to wider avenues and somewhat more frequent traffic, though without losing the smooth flow of the ride.

The arrival in Chaves offers an interesting contrast with the previous stretches. After many kilometers enjoying rural roads, one of the most important historic cities in northern Portugal appears, known for its Roman legacy, its medieval castle, and the famous Trajan’s Bridge over the Támega River, as well as its thermal waters, which have been used for almost two thousand years.

The stretch ends in Chaves, where among other things you should not miss Chaves Castle and Trajan’s Bridge, a symbol of the city. It was built by the Romans at the end of the 1st century over the Támega River and is still in use today. It preserves the original Roman milestones with inscriptions dedicated to Emperor Trajan.

If you have time and feel a little hungry, don’t forget to try the Pastel de Chaves, a puff pastry turnover filled with meat. A delight for the stomach.

Section 42: Chaves - M502 (7 Km)

We leave the urban surroundings of Chaves to follow the N103-5 northbound, riding along a wide, well-paved road with a very flowing layout. The first houses are soon left behind and the landscape opens up again among small farms, meadows and scattered homes, bringing back the calm that characterizes much of A Rota 18.

The route passes through Dom Jerónimo de Ataíde and continues toward Razedo, running parallel to the River Támega. For several kilometers, lovely views of the valley appear, with the river discreetly accompanying the ride and providing a pleasant contrast between the green riverside and the cultivated fields that cover the gentle slopes.

This is a comfortable stretch for unwinding after the visit to Chaves. The long straights and wide-radius bends let you enjoy the scenery without complications, while the odometer is already past 300 kilometers for the stage.

Section 43: M502 - M1053 (21 Km)

We leave the surroundings of Chaves to once again enter the peaceful rural landscape of Alto Támega, following the M502. The road winds gently between cultivated fields, small farms and traditional villages, offering a very pleasant ride with little traffic.

Along the way, we pass through places such as Santo António de Monforte, Mairos, São Tiago, São Cornélio, Trancas and Argemil, where numerous granite houses can still be found and the unhurried atmosphere typical of this borderland area in northern Portugal remains intact. The route alternates straight sections with gentle bends, allowing you to enjoy relaxed riding as the scenery constantly shifts between meadows, crops and soft hills.

As the kilometers go by, the road gains a little height and offers wide panoramic views over the fields surrounding these small settlements. It is one of those stretches that invite you to keep a calm pace, enjoying the silence, the clean air and the authenticity of a territory little traveled by conventional tourism. With this route, we will have already exceeded 320 kilometers of the stage.

The end of the stretch is marked by a fork where you must keep left to continue along the M1053.

Section 44: M1053 - M1055 (9 Km)

The M1053 continues to wind into a mid-mountain area where the road once again becomes the main attraction. The asphalt, in good condition and practically deserted, links gentle bends with tighter ones as it crosses a landscape dominated by pine forests, heaths, and vegetation-covered slopes.

After leaving Aveleda behind, the route steadily gains and loses altitude, offering lovely views over the small valleys formed by the tributaries of the Mente River. The feeling of isolation grows with every kilometer, turning this stretch into one of the quietest of the whole stage.

The road invites you to enjoy a relaxed ride, linking bends with complete naturalness and allowing you to take in a practically untouched setting, where silence and nature accompany you לאורך the entire route. With more than 330 kilometers covered during the day, this stretch offers a welcome break before tackling the final kilometers of the stage.

Without even noticing it, we change roads and are now riding on the M1055 .

Section 45: M1055 - N308 (2 Km)

The M1055 road continues descending gently between the small villages of Sandim and Ferreiros, crossing a mid-mountain landscape where pine woods and scrubland dominate. The excellent condition of the surface and the lack of traffic make this short stretch a real pleasure for any motorcyclist.

The linked bends follow one after another naturally, adapting to the mountain terrain and offering a very smooth ride. Through the gaps in the forest, pretty views occasionally open up over the slopes surrounding the valley, while the silence and the feeling of isolation once again take center stage.

Although it is a brief stretch, it retains all the essence of this part of A Rota 18: well-maintained secondary roads, practically untouched nature, and a leisurely pace that invites you to enjoy every curve. The odometer is now showing more than 330 kilometers covered during the stage.

At stage kilometer 333 we reach a fork where we must keep left, ending the stretch.

Section 46: N308 - N103-6 (12 Km)

This stretch follows the N308 between Ferreiros and Frades de Lomba, a secondary road that winds through a landscape of gentle mountains and small valleys. The excellent condition of the road surface, together with the light traffic, makes for very smooth riding, linking medium-radius bends with short straights.

The route passes through the outskirts of Brito de Lomba and Frades de Lomba, two small villages where the traditional stone houses blend perfectly into an environment dominated by forests, meadows, and vegetation-covered slopes. It is a very peaceful area, far from the main communication routes, where nature once again sets the pace of the journey.

For several kilometres the road follows the contours of the mountain range, offering constant changes of direction and very enjoyable riding. With more than 330 kilometers covered in this stage, this stretch keeps intact the essence of A Rota 18: lonely roads, authentic landscapes, and the pleasure of discovering little-known corners of northern Portugal.

Section 47: N103-6 - N103 (7 Km)

The N103-6 continues crossing the mountains of northeastern Portugal, between small stone villages and an increasingly rugged landscape. After passing near Revelhe, the road keeps an impeccable surface and a very enjoyable layout, linking medium-speed bends with small changes in gradient that make the ride especially pleasant.

The route runs between forests, scrub-covered slopes and quiet rural settlements such as Cruz de Revelhe, where the traditional atmosphere of this region can still be felt. There is hardly any traffic, allowing you to fully enjoy the silence, the natural surroundings and a road designed almost exclusively for the pleasure of riding.

In the last few kilometers, the route approaches the town of Soutelinho da Raia, where the landscape begins to open up slightly before returning to a more populated setting. By this stage of the stage, the odometer already exceeds 350 kilometers, reflecting an intense day of discovery along some of the most little-known and attractive roads in northern Portugal.

The stretch ends at a T-junction where you must turn left to continue the route.

Section 48: N103 - Bragań§a (41 Km)

The final stretch of this stage takes us along one of the most enjoyable roads in northeastern Portugal. The N103 and, later, the M504 run on through forests, gentle hills and small valleys, following a route full of flowing bends, ideal for enjoying the ride as the landscape changes with every kilometre.

After leaving Vinhais behind, the route crosses a natural setting of enormous beauty, passing near the Tuela River and by small villages such as Castrelos, Portela and Grandais. Traffic remains very light, allowing you to fully enjoy the silence and the feeling of travelling through one of the most authentic and least known areas of Portugal.

Little by little, the road begins to open up and the first signs of Bragança appear. After almost 400 kilometers of the stage, the satisfaction of reaching the end of the route blends with the excitement of discovering one of the country’s most important historic cities.

Bragança is a magnificent reward to round off this day. Its impressive medieval citadel, surrounded by one of the best-preserved walls in Portugal, houses a magnificent castle with its keep, narrow cobbled streets and historic buildings full of charm. Very close by, the modern Graça Morais Contemporary Art Centre and the Iberian Mask and Costume Museum are also well worth a visit, dedicated to the region’s traditional winter festivals. Strolling through its old quarter and enjoying the excellent Transmontano cuisine is the best way to celebrate the end of this unforgettable stage of A Rota 18.
